Scientific Resume
Frank Robben - May 1996
Education:
B.S., Engineering Physics, Univ. of Calif., Berkeley, 1954. Highest Honors.
M.S., Applied Physics, Univ. of Calif., Los Angeles, 1956.
Ph.D., Physics, Univ. of Calif., Berkeley, 1963.
Birth date: February 12, 1934
Birthplace: Sacramento, California
Professional Scientific and Engineering Experience:
July 1993 - March 1994
Participated with Kialoa II in a physical oceanographic study
of the formation of "Meddies" off the coast of Portugal. This
project was headed by Prof. L. Armi of the University of California, San
Diego and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and funded by the National
Science Foundation. Interested in layman's
description of the outflow from the Mediterranean?
December 1989 - August 1990
Visiting Research Engineer at Nissan Research Center, Yokuska,
Japan. Assisted in starting two research projects using laser based measurements
of the combustion gases in an engine cylinder, as well as general consulting.
Very interesting to work at a Japanese company and get to know Japanese
people.
June 1976 - January 1985:
Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, University of California, Berkeley.
Initiated and directed an experimental research program focused primarily
on the fluid mechanics of combustion. Managed a staff of 4 to 6 people and
several graduate students and worked closely with UC Department of Mechanical
Engineering faculty. Advanced from Research Physicist to Senior Research
Scientist.
August 1968 - June 1976:
Mechanical Engineering Department, University of California,
Berkeley.
Initiated and carried out research on rarefied gas fluid mechanics and weakly
ionized plasmas. Primarily experimental work involving spectroscopy and
other diagnostic techniques. Taught courses in thermodynamics, experimental
methods, electronics and computer programming. Advanced from Lecturer to
Associate Professor-in-Residence and Associate Research Engineer. Same position
in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department from 1973 to 1976.
March 1965 - August 1968:
Atomic Energy Company of Sweden, Nykoping, Sweden.
Initiated and carried out experimental research related to Magnetohydrodynamic
Power Generation, primarily focused on the ionization and recombination
processes in helium. Visiting Scientist.
July 1961 - March 1965:
Mechanical Engineering Department, University of California,
Berkeley.
Conducted experimental research on plasma recombination processes, then
initiated and carried out research on rarefied gas fluid mechanics. Graduate
Research Assistant until receiving Ph.D. in 1963, then Assistant Research
Engineer.
July 1960 - July 1961:
General Electric Missiles and Space Vehicles Division, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania.
Conducted experimental research related to Magnetohydrodynamic Power Generation,
focussing primarily on ionization and recombination processes in helium.
Engineer.
June 1955 - July 1960:
Lockheed Missiles and Space Division, Palo Alto, California.
Carried out research on molecular processes in shock waves, primarily molecular
vibrational relaxation. Engineer.
Pre 1955:
Summer employment at Picatinny Arsenal as student engineer,
and as a diesel and auto mechanic in Dixon.
Professional Society Membership (to 1985)
American Physical Society (APS)
Optical Society of America (OSA)
American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA)
American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
